A: personally, i wouldn’t get a convertible if you’re looking to spend a minimal amount of money fixing a car. High chance that it will start to leak, and fixing a leak in a convertible is a real pain, and you usually end up getting frustrated and buying a new top. But the M42 motor (in the 318) is pretty resilient, so if you’re willing to cope with that, then go for it. depending on the year, which you didn’t list.

A: here in s.w. missouri u can buy a convertable new beetle for under $10G, but it won’t be a new new beetle. ur prolly looking at an ‘03.

Q: Can I fit a 572 Chevy Big Block in a 2004 mustang?
i have a 04 convertible mustang gt. everything is customized, but it has a lot of km’s. i saw a cheap 572 big block for sale and i want to know if it will fit so i can buy it.

A: Why? Why would you put a crappy motor in a good car? It’s way too much work just to fit that in there in the first place. Stick with the 4.6. That, and if the 572 is going for cheap, I would imagine it is either stolen, or it has so many issues (like all chevies… tee hee) that it isn’t worth building. The 4.6 (presumably) has more than enough snot to get the job done.

Q: Can you help me I am thinking of buying either a 1969 Datsun Fairlady Convertible or a 1960 FIAT 1100?

A: I would personally go with the 1969 Datsun Fairlady since my dad rebuilt one and it ran great when he finished it and he let me drive it when i got my licence so i had fun driving it around and a lot of people who saw it liked it

I have a 1991 325i convertible, & I’m only needing the “top portion” of the pistons (6) – which personally, I refer to as the “piston cap”. I don’t need connecting rods, or anything else other than the rings which I can purchase @ will later. I’m not rebuilding the engine, I’m only replacing the caps – surely this should be MUCH cheaper than the whole set. Thanks community!!

A: The piston is a 1 piece part. There is no piston cap. You have to tear down the engine to replace a piston.

Q: Is this used car sale deal worth it for me?
Ok so I went car shopping found a used 06 Audi a4 convertible for 26,000. I have an 07 Nissan Titan that I owe 28,000 for and I’m up side down in my loan for about 8-9k. The dealer was willing to pay off what I owe on the car plus still negociate on the used car if I put 5,000 down. I have around 2500 cash and the rest would have to be put on a card. I’m not sure if this is worth it to me or should I look for a cheaper car? The problem is, is that if I trade in my truck we’d have to buy something for my husband to drive and if we both bought cars from the same lot they were willing to do a deal. However since all our money would be going towards my down payment he would be putting nothing down on a car he found for 20,000. So my proposal I want to make to the salesmen is if we buy the 2 cars we want both for 40,000 out the door with 5,000 down and to pay off my truck out right. If he goes for this witch I have no doubt he wouldn’t because he was showing us cars for around 30k and said he sell them to us for 25k witch is what we said our price range is. Does this seem like a deal that is to my benefit? I’m not worried about securing a loan I have good credit so that’s not a problem. Should I be looking for cheaper cars? Any advice would be helpful. Were pretty set on getting 2 cars and from the same lot so the dealer will take the loss on our truck. Witch isn’t a problem because we both want Audis. A: I think that you should wait and do a little more research as to what is out there and what options that you have as far as getting rid of the Titan. I know what it is like when you get into a car and it feels so good to drive it and you want it, but remember that the feeling is fleeting. If your titan is running fine and there is nothing else that is making you really want to rid yourself of the vehicle, then I would suggest wait. On the flip side, if you know that you have enough money to get the vehicles, make your car notes with no problem, and still be comfortable, then there is nothing wrong with some debt if you are happy. You only live once after all. Good luck and go with your gut on this one.

Q: 2000 Saab 9-3 Convertible: Hydraulic Hose Soft Top Problem?

I am in desperate need of advice and will appreciate any information that you can provide.
On June 6th, I purchased a 200 Saab 9-3 Convertible. The top seemed to operate slowly. The sales person said that “it just took a minute.” After driving the care for a few days, the top operated more smoothly. I thought that perhaps the car had been sitting on the lot and the battery had lost its charge. About a month later, the top failed to go down in mid-operation.

One of the hydraulic hoses that attach to the driver side cylinder blew off of the fitting. I ordered the hose from the dealer and was told that these hoses almost never need to be replaced. My general mechanic replaced the hose and as soon as we put the top down, a hose connecting to the cylinder on the passenger’s side blew off of the fitting.

I decided to take the care to a Saab mechanic to find out the cause of the hoses blowing off. It turns out that ALL of the hoses have lost the black plastic coating. The mechanic believes that I will continue to blow hoses and suggested replacing all of them. He has posted online threads to other mechanics but has yet to find anyone who has had this problem.

I took the hose to a hydraulic hose company. The owner said that the black plastic coating is an integral part of the crimping and since it is crumbling off, the fitting is not tight enough to withstand the pressure. He said that it should not be coming off and that it was poor workmanship from the manufacturer. He concurs with the fact that I will continue to blow off the hoses. He suggested just replacing the 2 hoses on each cylinder, since they provide the power to lift the top.

In addition, I have called a few other places to see if they have seen this problem. One mechanic said that the Saab mechanic doesn’t know what he was doing and that couldn’t possibly be the problem, since those hoses rarely fail. Both mechanics have worked on Saab’s for over 20 years. I feel like I am stuck between a battle of the experts. I know that I am running out of money and I certainly can’t afford to replace all of the hoses.

Have you ever seen this type of problem? Do you know where I can get the hoses cheaper? Ideally, I would like to find an overseas source, as the US sites are still very expensive. Do you have any advice? I can also send pictures of the hose if that helps, just e-mail me.

A: Hi Misty,

It matters not whether hose failure is a common occurrence with your year/make/model. It is a fact that yours are failing and you have the salesman as a witness that the top worked poorly when you bought it. If the top worked slowly, you had a problem right there and then that should have been addressed by the dealer. They should now repair the problem under your warranty, no matter what it takes. Generaly once a problem is known to the dealer, you should be covered even if the warranty runs out.
Convertible power systems are very sensitive to the type of fluid used. Sopme use transmission fluid (Red) and some use brake fluid (Clear). In either case you should be able to see throught it. I don’t think any systems used brake fluid since the mid 50’s. If your system leaked and someone topped it off with brake fluid, it may be attacking your hoses. This could have been done by the previous owner or the dealer where you bought it.
If you have a mixture of the two, the fluid will appear either pink or maybe even frothy to the point that it is no longer translucent. Compare it to 100% transmission fluid.
I believe that you have three options. Have the hoses replaced by the dealership or by a hydraulic hose company. The other part of the options is to do them all now or as they blow.

Q: Husband’s priorities. Wants to upgrade car despite bad economy.?
We have a 7 month old baby. We own a house with thank goodness some equity but probably $50K less equity than before. In any case not enough for downpayment on new house.

Our plan was to sell house, bank equity, rent cheap place for two years to get downpayment again to buy another place (first house not really baby friendly either so another factor in decision to sell house).

We do not have a 3 month emergency fund (paid of debts and time off with new baby).

I have six figure salary and two cars. A 2005 $30K Honda convertible sports car — two seater. And a boring but functional Mazda 626 sedan. Both cars are paid in full.

We use the two-seater to commute and the sedan to transport us + baby when we are all together.

He suddenly has the itch for new car and wants to upgrade to 2009 two-seat sports car that is in the $30-40K range. He wants me to sell my convertible to do that which means taking on new auto loan for about $15K and my eating the depreciation on my car after only 3-years.

I think this is a ridiculous idea at this time and we should deal with home sale and repurchase before considering new car. Plus with a child if we do buy new car even if sporty I think we should get a car that we can all three fit into…..

I loved my little two-seater convertible, but our home and baby should I think take priorty for a couple years.

(We are mid-30’s and he does not own a car but uses mine — I treat him as though they are our cars even if I owned before we married). And he makes 1/3 of my income, so I am the one who really has to stress about any fixed monthly debts being increased…..
I should add, I had this discussion with him telling him, that with the risk of layoffs, and our not having fall back savings we should not buy a new car. He debated with me (cheap right now — he can get a deal) and is pretty much pouting now….

A: Your instincts are 100% right. If he only makes $30,000 a year, HE cannot afford a $40,000 car. Period. If he was a good father, he should understand that his absolute first priority has to be the financial safety of his family. That means that an emergency fund gets created first. Then you make sure you have enough life and disability insurance so that if either of you gets hurt, sick or dies, there is enough money coming in to pay the bills. Then you look at housing costs. All this means that the cars you already have get driven longer and maintained well.

Option 2 is he takes a second job and uses the income from that job to pay for the sports car.

It needs a new top, a new key hole for access to the back trunk but he rigged it with a wire so it will pop open, it needs a dash board piece, and a rack on truck where there is just rust holes remaining. A: You would be better off super charging a Corvette vs turbo charging.

You can put a Procharger on for about $7,000 installed. Go to West Coast Corvettes and check out the options. Magnusson’s are a little more expensive, and will require an after market hood as well. This may not be an issue if you are going with a body kit.

Check out East Coast Superchargers – they do great work. However, unless you don’t care about the warranty on the car, supercharging or turbocharging WILL void the warranty.

You may also want to consider upgrading the brake system to the ZO6 brakes (or comparable aftermarket). That much more horsepower will require better stopping power.

All this being said, I would not do any of the above. Go with a cold air induction unit, long tube headers, hi flow cats and a good exhaust system (recommend Corsa). Better than that, just buy a ZO6 or a ZR1.

Something to consider…A stock C6 Corvette with 436hp will smoke 95% of the cars on the road. The car only weighs 3100lbs. Doing the above will give you about 35-40 more hp which will take care of another 2-3%.

A: In my honest opinion I think the 2010 mustang is the worst looking mustang yet. Way too much plastic around the bumpers. Just not for me.

A: I would wait until you actually have the keys in your hand. I would also go with the hardtop as the vert is a couple hundred pounds heavier and the GT500 is rather portly to begin with. I wouldn’t change the any exterior features. I would swap out the stock supercharger for an uprated Kenne Bell unit. I would also invest in some wider wheels/tires, as the stock sized tires don’t provide near enough traction off the line.

Who cars about what the car looks like, The GT500 already has good looks. Under the hood is what matters. I have to chuckle at the people who will spend thousands of dollars on body kits and custom paint. Only to have a bone stock motor under the hood.

Q: Will Audi develop a hardtop convertible by the middle of 2010?
I’m planning to buy a hardtop convertible- I want it from Audi- and so I want to look to see if they will have one or not. Any price will do!

A: In short, No. Audi believes that a soft-top convertible is more posh and I agree. Audi hasn’t released any information about a future hardtop convertible but that doesn’t mean it isn’t in the mix. The newest Audi convertible will be the A5/S5 convertible. This will be a 2010 model. A: You would be better off super charging a Corvette vs turbo charging.

You can put a Procharger on for about $7,000 installed. Go to West Coast Corvettes and check out the options. Magnusson’s are a little more expensive, and will require an after market hood as well. This may not be an issue if you are going with a body kit.

Check out East Coast Superchargers – they do great work. However, unless you don’t care about the warranty on the car, supercharging or turbocharging WILL void the warranty.

You may also want to consider upgrading the brake system to the ZO6 brakes (or comparable aftermarket). That much more horsepower will require better stopping power.

All this being said, I would not do any of the above. Go with a cold air induction unit, long tube headers, hi flow cats and a good exhaust system (recommend Corsa). Better than that, just buy a ZO6 or a ZR1.

Something to consider…A stock C6 Corvette with 436hp will smoke 95% of the cars on the road. The car only weighs 3100lbs. Doing the above will give you about 35-40 more hp which will take care of another 2-3%.

A: I would wait until you actually have the keys in your hand. I would also go with the hardtop as the vert is a couple hundred pounds heavier and the GT500 is rather portly to begin with. I wouldn’t change the any exterior features. I would swap out the stock supercharger for an uprated Kenne Bell unit. I would also invest in some wider wheels/tires, as the stock sized tires don’t provide near enough traction off the line.

Who cars about what the car looks like, The GT500 already has good looks. Under the hood is what matters. I have to chuckle at the people who will spend thousands of dollars on body kits and custom paint. Only to have a bone stock motor under the hood.

Q: Is this used car sale deal worth it for me?
Ok so I went car shopping found a used 06 Audi a4 convertible for 26,000. I have an 07 Nissan Titan that I owe 28,000 for and I’m up side down in my loan for about 8-9k. The dealer was willing to pay off what I owe on the car plus still negociate on the used car if I put 5,000 down. I have around 2500 cash and the rest would have to be put on a card. I’m not sure if this is worth it to me or should I look for a cheaper car? The problem is, is that if I trade in my truck we’d have to buy something for my husband to drive and if we both bought cars from the same lot they were willing to do a deal. However since all our money would be going towards my down payment he would be putting nothing down on a car he found for 20,000. So my proposal I want to make to the salesmen is if we buy the 2 cars we want both for 40,000 out the door with 5,000 down and to pay off my truck out right. If he goes for this witch I have no doubt he wouldn’t because he was showing us cars for around 30k and said he sell them to us for 25k witch is what we said our price range is. A: I think that you should wait and do a little more research as to what is out there and what options that you have as far as getting rid of the Titan. I know what it is like when you get into a car and it feels so good to drive it and you want it, but remember that the feeling is fleeting. If your titan is running fine and there is nothing else that is making you really want to rid yourself of the vehicle, then I would suggest wait. On the flip side, if you know that you have enough money to get the vehicles, make your car notes with no problem, and still be comfortable, then there is nothing wrong with some debt if you are happy. You only live once after all. Good luck and go with your gut on this one.

Q: Another car seat question… best choice convertible?
So I’m torn about this…. I know (or at least last time I reserched this) that the Sunshine Kids Radian xtsl is the best convertible seat on the market with a rear facing weight limit of 45 lbs and a forward facing limit of 80 lbs, but this seat is $300.00!

The Graco MyRide 65 rear faces to 40 lbs and forward faces to 65 lbs., and it is currently on sale at my local target for $109.99!! Regular price $149.99.

Are the higher weight limits with the Radian worth paying double the price?

And… will we really get use out of the carseat, meaning will we really use it until 80lbs, or is it more likely that by the time my son is 65lbs., he won’t need a carseat anymore? (He’s been in the 50% for height and weight since birth… he’s now 6 months old)

Radian is one of the only (the only) I believe who publishes their crash testing results, and they are impressive… Graco does not.

The 80lb weight limit may be unrealistic, but it does have a taller shell (almost 2 inches taller than the myride), so we will be able to use it longer than the myride and definitely until all my son needs is a simple booster.

It allows for tethering rear facing (britax is the only other seat that does this, but britax does not have the weight limits to allow for extended rear facing like the myride or the radian)

The Radian offers much more leg room and is easier for kids to climb into since it sits very low on the seat.

A: The Radian is a great seat because it is the slimmest, you can fit three across in a standard car. It is, however, very long when rear facing – it did not fit in our Vibe. Really, the best car seat is the one that will fit and install in your car correctly.

In our state a kid needs to be in a carseat or booster until 80 lbs. It has been proven that boosters that use the car seat belt are not nearly as safe as the five point harness seats – that is why the Radian is worth the money for the extra poundage it carries. But, like I said we couldn’t get it in our car so we went with a Britax that goes to 65 lbs.

A: Yes I think it is to risky. I wouldn’t do it. The money is tight for everyone you don’t know if they could be selling a bad car seat for money. People are sick.

A: The problem is not what you are looking for, but what you are willing to pay and too whom.
To whom is the largest obstacle. There just are not a lot of reputable car used car dealers that bother with cars in this price range.
So if you can not go up to the 7000 dollar range, you will most likely have to settle for a private seller.

A: i know many moms who have gone straight to the convertible seat and its fine. if you go that route, make sure it can handle newborns, some are to big for tiny babies. i know the true fit goes from 5lbs to 35lbs RF, which is awesome. ive used the seat for my almost 3 year old, and for a friends 3 weeks old (8lbs) and both have fit wonderfully

the only “issue” would be the inconvenience factor. my son was in the infant carrier till 4 months, when i was able to transfer him (while sleeping) from the car seat to his crib without him waking up the first few months, sleep was precious! and it was nice to be able to lift the sleeping baby from the car still in his seat and run into the grocery store for milk. without the carrier, i’d have either had to wait till he was awake or till i could get a sitter, or wake him up and carry him through the store either in my arms or a sling type carrier.

some moms prefer to carry their child anyway (in their arms, sling, wrap, baby bjorn or whatever) – if thats the case, you’ll be fine. kids do not NEED the infant carrier, its more a convenience thing for the parents. they would be perfectly safe in a convertible seat.

A: No, it’s not more dangerous, as long as you watch it on wet roads. The GT has a lot of power and torque, with not much weight over the drive wheels, and it’s easier to break loose and lose traction on a wet road. On icy roads, you have to be really careful.

A: Not too many choices are available. I recommend a used bmw or audi convertible. they all seat 4, 5 if you really push it, and quality is the typical german interior. handling and comfort are their strong suits.
mustang gt conv is a good one. backseats kinda tight, but seats 4 if rear occupants are small, like girls for instance. power is way stronger than either cars above, but quality is well below.
another one is mitsubishi eclipse (the new model), but since I dunno much about those I cant say anything about them.
Stay away from sebrings. reliability is so bad you’d better live near a chrysler service dept. if you want one. No camry solara either, the top is very flimsy and ill fitting.
The only thing I gotta remind you is they all dont have good rep for reliability, so be prepared to see a rather high bill on maintenance.

A: I have an 02 with 63K on it. Still feels, looks, and drives like new. It’s all in how well it’s taken care of. Oil changes are every 15,000 miles, or annually, whichever is first. For me it’s annually. Oil is about $9 a quart, 7 quarts, plus filter cartridge. There is only one kind of oil it can take. Castrol TWS motorsport 10W-60.
Rear tires are every 15000 miles also. Fronts maybe 25000 if you’re lucky.
If it were me, I’d go for the 2004. Not a convertible, and not SMG are my reasons. Mileage is not a consideration unless it’s really high. Do not drive in snow. You already have that covered. Good. I’m sure the car would do just fine if it sat higher, and didn’t have 40 series tires on it. I put wider tires on mine, so they’re 35s in the back now, even worse.
SMG is great for a track, but regular driving I prefer the manual. Not sure what shift by wire means, unless he was referring to the SMG, because the manual stick goes straight into the gearbox, no wires, no linkage really other than the stick.
Don’t worry about repair costs, mine has cost very little, if at all. Inspection 2 is every 30000 miles which means all three are about due, at a cost of ~ $1500. Only #3 might be free because of the maintenance warranty. Mine has had two of them already, both covered by the maintenance warranty, which is now expired. Oh and gas mileage, officially it was listed as 16/24. I have never seen 16, and get more than 24 on every fill up. I average 25 all the time, don’t know how high it would be highway only, I’m thinking over 30, as I’ve gotten 28-29 on long highway trips myself, but I wasn’t going 55 which is how the EPA tests I think. 25 is really good for 333 HP in my opinion. I don’t drive with a light foot either.

Mine is for sale, $26000 if you’re near Denver, with lots of later model retrofits like Sirius, MP3, LEDs, front strut brace, etc. It’s a wonderful car and I’m having a hard time deciding to sell it. I love BMW 6 cylinders, but I also test drove a new one and love it too. So if someone says they’ll buy it, I guess I’ll let it go.

Not trying to continue a “pissing match”, but I feel since I am right, I must explain. I am providing examples of what I have seen and what I do to my E46 M3, to provide information related to the question.

As I said, I OWN an E46 M3, I drove it off the lot with 3 miles on it. I know what BMW insists is the right oil, and it is not 15W-50, I have the service bulletins, and the sticker under the hood specifying use only the oil I stated. You can go to Walmart if you like. Inspection 2 is more than a simple fluid check. It includes a valve adjustment, which is why it is so expensive. As I stated, I have not paid for one yet, but I know what the dealer would have charged. I changed my tire widths because I was doing track days. See my avatar? That’s me. That has nothing to do with anything though, I was simply stating that it is no good in the snow, even worse with wider tires. And there is no wire or cable for the transmission, it’s not a transaxle. I’ve been under the car and changed the oil on the transmission with- well I’ll just say it wasn’t from Walmart. I would think that an owner of an E46 M3 can speak the truth about what oil to use and what maintenance costs better than an E36 owner. I wouldn’t tell an E92 owner that they don’t know what they are talking about after owning if for 6 years. When I turn my key on, the service indicator says 15525 miles to next oil change after I just did it. Explain that. It counts down mile for mile unless the engine is cold or being driven hard, at which point it counts down faster. BMW wants it in for an oil change every year if you don’t get to the 15000 miles. I’ve had this car for 6 years, I think I know how to change the oil and what the service guys at the dealer have told me. And since I own this car and fill it up on a regular basis (with premium) I know what kind of mileage it gets, you are guessing.

If this tipping point comes, it could happen cataclysmic style, in say, a single week, or even a single trading day.It’s like a herd of buffalo that just gets spooked. They all start running for the exit door at the same moment because there’s a big price to be paid for being late to exit a cataclysmic dropping market.

though we presume that there are rational actors, factually, we have a construct that is rules based, and programmed to reflect models of scenarios. these are not rational actors in black swan events, since they lack introspection to give them pause. indeed, until some manager intervenes, there may be plenty of instability that may appear to be a ‘crash’, but it is only the execution of a computer model, preserving capital or reducing losses for the investors positioned within the fund.

A: You are allowed to just use the brand name. You’re not allowed to denounce it.
If you write “He drove a Chevrolet Camaro, which is a crappy car nobody should buy” they’ll likely sue you if you publish. If you write something nice or neutral, they won’t.

Besides, if you get as far as to publish, there will be a copyeditor reading through all of it and if they find any legal issues, they will make sure to check on them and tell you if you have to change something. Q: Which Car Should I Get? (Please Help!)?
First of all, I am going to get my first car soon, and I have worked hard and saved up a lot of money in order to get a car. I am almost certainly getting a used car, and because it’s used, I have so many possibilities! I really need help. The cars that I am considering are:

Ford Mustang: I want a GT, and not a convertible. I love from the year 2006 to a new 2010;
Price Range: $18,000 – $33,000

Cadillac Escalade: Yes, I know. They are way too much money! But not a used 2004!
Price Range: $18,000 – $22,000

BMW 328i or 525i: They are a little boring, but a black 2008 328i or a black 2007 525i are nice!
Price Range: $21,000 – $24,000

Jeep Wrangler: Probably what most of you will say is best, a 2009 to 2006 black Jeep Wrangler:
Price Range: $22,000 – $25,000

I know these are very high prices for a first car, but I really do love cars, and I want my first car to be something I remember, and most likely keep for a long time. So, I am mostly leaning towards a Ford Mustang. I would love an Escalade, but I think it is just too much car. If I get the mustang, I will be able to afford it new.

A: i have driven each one of these car, since most of my friends have them, (i am 18). i am an american muscle fanatic, however i must say that the bmw 328i out classes all. its luxurious, powerful, comfortable and a head turner. i never expected it to be as good as it truely is. going around corners at high speeds is an experience to remember (total control) and NONE of the others give you the feeling of control a bimmer does. i would then say the mustang, for power, and looks, the interior is bland but racing from light to light in one is amazing, especially in the v8 gt. however going around corners is terrible, there is no control and if you live in an area with a lot of snow DO NOT buy it. rear-wheel drive and snow dont mix. then i would say the jeep. they are fun especially when driven on a beach haha. handeling is eh speed is ehh, but the last and the modle where the top comes off is a neat iconic feature, which i personally enjoy. and personally i think the escalade epecially the early ones are crap (This is the only one i have never driven). they are too big, eat gas and where as they may be comfortable, they arnt practicle for everyday use. i hope this helps you

I’m going to turn 16 in January 2010, and I want a BMW 335i Convertible. My mom says if I have A’s & B’s, then I can have a new car, but if not, then a use one. A: The difference between new and used can stretch wide. A new car is your best choice if money is not an issue. Although getting a used car that has been certified by a reputable dealer can save you ( your mom ) thousands of dollars and still ride and look new. Q: How Likely is it that the Boomers Will All Pull their Money Out of Equities in the Same Week?
The Boomers are a demographic bulge of people whose movement through time has affected many parts of USA in many ways. At present a lot of them are fairly heavily invested in portfolios of mutual funds.

But they are all going to reach “retirement age” at about the same time. Once a person retires they no longer have earned income coming in from a “job”. Once they start taking their social security, it costs a lot to go back to “work” at a “paying job”. They lose their ability to make up any losses that they may experience in the equities markets. Whatever losses they have to take there have a permanent and non-reversible impact on their quality of life going forward, from age 65.

Accordingly their risk tolerance goes way down. In fact, it may go down far enough that they no longer really want to take any risk at all. They want their golden years to be 100% predictable, not dicey and not on a roller coaster with equities markets.

They might feel more comfortable in a bond portfolio, with plenty of diversitification, including governments T-Bills, TIPS, foreign bonds, high grade corporate bonds, warrents, and convertible debentures, and various kinds of short term commercial paper.

If this tipping point comes, it could happen cataclysmic style, in say, a single week, or even a single trading day.It’s like a herd of buffalo that just gets spooked. They all start running for the exit door at the same moment because there’s a big price to be paid for being late to exit a cataclysmic dropping market.

If this seems like an incredible statement to you, take a look at the history of 1929 and the stock market crash. The crash fed on itself. It happened because it was happening. The trend is your friend, until it’s not, and then you better pay yourself first by liquidating and taking your cash off the table.

Q: Is this used car sale deal worth it for me?
Ok so I went car shopping found a used 06 Audi a4 convertible for 26,000. I have an 07 Nissan Titan that I owe 28,000 for and I’m up side down in my loan for about 8-9k. The dealer was willing to pay off what I owe on the car plus still negociate on the used car if I put 5,000 down. I have around 2500 cash and the rest would have to be put on a card. I’m not sure if this is worth it to me or should I look for a cheaper car? The problem is, is that if I trade in my truck we’d have to buy something for my husband to drive and if we both bought cars from the same lot they were willing to do a deal. However since all our money would be going towards my down payment he would be putting nothing down on a car he found for 20,000. So my proposal I want to make to the salesmen is if we buy the 2 cars we want both for 40,000 out the door with 5,000 down and to pay off my truck out right. If he goes for this witch I have no doubt he wouldn’t because he was showing us cars for around 30k and said he sell them to us for 25k witch is what we said our price range is. A: I think that you should wait and do a little more research as to what is out there and what options that you have as far as getting rid of the Titan. I know what it is like when you get into a car and it feels so good to drive it and you want it, but remember that the feeling is fleeting. If your titan is running fine and there is nothing else that is making you really want to rid yourself of the vehicle, then I would suggest wait. On the flip side, if you know that you have enough money to get the vehicles, make your car notes with no problem, and still be comfortable, then there is nothing wrong with some debt if you are happy. You only live once after all. Good luck and go with your gut on this one.

Q: is there any liability risk of buying a car with salvage title if I own a house?
Recently went to car dealer and was looking at used Saab 9-3 convertible. His car for sale was a 99 with with 80k mi for 8k. Almost exact same car being offered privately but with salvage title(due to theft so he says) for 6k. (blue book fwiw says $8500) Dealer was telling me to stay away from salvage cars, especially if I am a homeowner. What does this mean, or was he just feeding me lines?

A: i own a car lot and i sometimes buy cars from the auction with a salvage title. i resell them at good prices and i also let the customers know but as long as you keep the car for yourself and not resell it then your in good condition. your house doesnt have anything to do with it.

accurate price, check the Kelley Blue Book. It will tell price ranges for various different conditions of the car(fair, good, etc.). Average miles varies from about 12,000 to 15,000 per year. Insurance for a 16 year old person will be relatively high, especially with a car like a Mustang.

NADA “clean – good” value is ~8200. And Edmunds lowballs at 6800. Quite a huge range!! I have only been posting on craigslist and using a black/white “for sale” sign. He sent the pics with nice rims, when I got there there were shit rims on it, he sold them and told me the pics he sent me were old. also it needs alot cosmetic repairs its a Miata 1991 including a new top anyways, I dont mind it because its only $1300 and we tried talk him down to $1100 but then he gave me this story about not having the pink slip and that it will take 3 weeks to reorder another one because the other one he ordered never came in and if we just did a bill of sale he would do it for $1100. He mentioned that this is what he needed to get rid of cause he was in trouble then he said later he does for a living and will be getting another car soon, so he resells used cars out from his home. He had his brother and a sister there. This was a very poor side of town and they looked very poor, he said he could not drive car to me to show me because he had no license and he did not speak great English.

I am interested in the car but I dont want to get screwed. What steps do I need to do to verify valitity the purchase. He mentioned a bill of sale and that he could put I paid much less than what I actually paid.

My gut says no but I dont want to miss out on a good opportunity, it drives well and gets 40mpg
and we need transporation badly. The tags on it say 10/2010
It needs a new top, a new key hole for access to the back trunk but he rigged it with a wire so it will pop open, it needs a dash board piece, and a rack on truck where there is just rust holes remaining. Just cosmetic details, oh I forgot to mention, I googled mapped his address and as of Oct 2009 the miata was parked out at the front of this house, which was a good sign.

just take the vin # and take it up to the police station they should be able to tell u if the car have been reported as stolen….by the way how are you going to make the transfer without tittle???

Q: i need some help on buying used cars refunds?
Okay so here’s the story

less than a month ago i bought a 1998 Mitsubishi Spyder Eclipse convertible for 4,990 with 120,000miles on it i checked the engine, and it needed a new timing belt, timing belt cover and a new oxygen sensor, they agreed to get me those items.
i paid him 1,500 down and payments of $200
with-in 1 day of owning the car i found out my brakes are BAD they are metal to metal! so i tell the dealer this was jacked up of them… to sell me a car with bad brakes so after countless phone calls and arguing they offer to fix my brakes for FREE i was very glad

so 1 week after the new brakes I’m driving 30 min out of town and i’m exiting off the freeway and my car completely stops. they told me they changed the timing belt with the brakes, and i think it was the timing belt and it fucked over? but then later on they tell me my BLOCK went out… i not sure what that is but they made it sound very important over the phone…
okay so they tried getting me into an another car so i tried new cars and everything but! i told them i just want a refund and out of this hard ache!
my sales dealer person, says the owner said “I never refunded anyone or ever will.” theseswhere his own WORDS i was so mad that i walked out without no cars or anything so I’m going to take him to court and i just needed to know is there anyway i can get my refund? i really want to get into a nicer and rreliabledealership

Q: How to convince parents to get me the car i want?
Ok, so my dad has been working on cars his whole life. He mostly deals with cosmetic aspects of the car but occasionally deals with some stuff under the hood, so he thinks whatever he says about a car is right. I turn 16 soon and we are starting to look for my first car. He keeps telling me he can get me a used civic for like $3000 to $4000. But I think I am entitled pick out the car as long as I am considering my price range and how reasonable it is. I have been doing research on this for over 4 years and im not about to let it all go to waste. What I really want is a nice used 2000 BMW 3 series convertible. About every other week i come across a nice one for sale for about $5000 with about 100000 miles and no issues. He thinks BMW means rich people. He doesn’t even consider it for 10 seconds, and when i tell him the facts like im in a debate he just ignores me. I mean with a luxury car you get luxury safety. Even though it is a convertible it is a very safe car to drive and for the price it is practically a steal.

So i need someone to help me with ideas to convince them to get me it. i already tried the debate approach and offering to pay half. thanks for the help

A: It can’t really be done. The roof adds a lot of structural stiffness to a car, so when they make a convertible the whole body is beefed up.

Back in the early 1980s, Lee Iaccoca, the president of Chrysler, wanted to re-introduce convertibles to the US. (Our car companies hadn’t been making convertibles for a while). He asked some of his engineers if they could convert one of their cars to a convertible, and they told him it was impossible. He got angry. He wanted to drive around in a convertible and see peoples’ reactions. So they ended up cutting the roof off a car, but they also had to weld the doors closed and weld supports into them. So Iaccoca had to climb over the top to get in, but then he could drive it like a convertible, except of course he couldn’t put the top up. They did end up re-introducing convertibles, though. 8^)
