Q: Why is there a bad smell from my minivan air condition right after I turn it on?
I got the van brand new last Sep 2009 and didn’t use the a/c all winter. I turned it on during some warm days this spring 2010 and immediately there’s a bad smell coming out. I thought this happens when freon is about to run out – but I got this brand new 7 months ago. Thanks for your all your answers.
A: If it’s a “musty” smell, it could be a build up of moisture/mold. If you run the AC on “recirculate” only, moisure builds up in the system and mold can grow. If the build-up isn’t bad, you can usually fix it by running your system with the AC “on” and the vents set to “fresh air.” After several hours of operation, this should dry out the system. If there is a lot of mold build-up or if moisture has caused some of the ducting to rot, you may have to get professional cleaning or repair.
In the future, it’s a good idea to only run the AC on “recirculate” until the temp reaches a comfortable level and then run it on “fresh air”…
If it is a burnt or “oily” smell, there could be a problem under the hood. If your car is leaking oil, for example, and it hits hot metal on the engine, that smell wil carry into the passenger compartment via the vents.

A: no and no
one: for $5,000 you can buy a car from 1998 not 1988
two: jaguars are very very expensive to own and repair
three: they break down more often than other vehicles in this class
don’t buy a jaguar or a Land Rover ever.
Q: Dodge Grand Caravan or Nissan Quest?
I have around 10 grand CND , and I am on the market for a used minivan. I have narrowed my choices to two , 2008-2010 Dodge Grand Caravan or a 2005-2008 Nissan Quest. I am asking for an opinion on which one to choose. I have found a Caravan for around that price and there are plenty of Quests in that price range. Are there any problems of which i should be aware of? Are there any better minivans for that price range?
A: I currently own a 2004 Nissan Quest. I bought it with 55k miles and its the SL model , it has the power back liftgate, and a power sliding door. I love both features and being able to use the remote on it. It also has heated leather and DVD system in it. I paid 10,500 for it . I recommend the Quest, the styling of the interior is neat, and has plenty of power, The only thing i’ve found bad about it is in cold weather the Tire Pressure monitoring system will say the tires are flat, when they are not. The turning radias , trying to turn into tight spots is difficult, but i expected that. I can not say anything about the dodge grand caravan, but highly recommend the quest, if you can get the SE model of the quest, it features both power sliding doors, and some have a SKYVIEW option with 5 sunroofs, and is freakin awesome.
Q: Is this a sign that I should go to another dealership? Or just find another salesman?
I am looking to purchase a new 2010 Toyota Sienna due to my expanded family(I have 3 kids, ages 7, 5, and 2 months). Anyways, I was going to purchase this vehicle from the dealership that sold me my current car 2 years ago. Although the salesman that sold me the vehicle is no longer there, I wanted to give them a shot. I found the vehicle that I want at a decent price on their website, so I got in touch with the internet manager and he quoted me on the prices. He told me that because my 2008 trade in would most likely be upside down, I would need a downpayment of at least $1000. Well, currently the promotion for the Toyotathon states that for a Sienna, you can either get $750 cash back, or use it towards your downpayment. That means that if I use that as a downpayment and I match the $250,that would equal the $1000 needed for the downpayment. He told me that he was looking for more banks to approve me and that he would get back to me on Monday, but that was after I called and checked on my credit application. He never had the decency to let me know what was going on. He was also rude to me, so I told him that I would not be interested in purchasing a vehicle from him. Another salesman was ok at first, but I guess the other man spoke to him because he called me and said that I “text” the dude and told him I didn’t want his services, which was not true, and that I agreed to a downpayment of $1500 dollars, which I did not. The man told me that I was approved, but they are trying to sell me a used minivan, but I want a new one. My 2008 Toyota Corolla has 22,000 miles on it and I have owned that vehicle for 2 years. Plus, I have Toyota Financial and I have had issues with them in the past with them not processing my payments correctly. The salesman insisted that I have to use them as the lienholder but I do not. What do I do? Should I give another salesman a shot, or should I just leave that dealership alone and take my business elsewhere? And what is wrong with using that $750 as a promotion and matching the rest of my money towards the downpayment?
I just need to know if I am in the right or wrong because something just doesn’t seem right.
A: go to another dealer
Q: Best Priced, Most Fuel Efficient Crossover ?
We’re planning on having a 3rd kid and need a bigger vehicle. I want a crossover (3rd row seating not being a minivan) that is reasonably priced and great on gas. I would like to have a 2009 or 2010, no older. I just can’t seem to find anything that is nice. I currently have a 2004 Ford Escape that I bought brand new and the sucker cost me $41,000!!! I was a novice on purchasing vehicles (this is the first and only vehicle I’ve ever owned). So I have a few problems with purchasing brand new and would prefer a 1 year old used…my car is completely paid for, so I have no payments and love it, so I don’t want to spend too much and have huge payments again; and I will not pay that much for a silly vehicle ever again.
I appreciate every ones help.
A: The only high-reliability, fuel-efficient crossover is the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, with an EPA-estimated in-city gas mileage of 27 mpg and on-highway gas mileage of 25 mpg. (Note that most of the gain is experienced in in-city driving.)
The 2010 Auto Reliability GPA of the Toyota Highlander Hybrid is 3.75 over a 4-year data history.
For comparison, here are overall 2010 Auto Reliability GPAs for several brands, in descending order:
Honda: 3.67 (an A)
Toyota: 3.53 (a low A)
Subaru: 2.61 (a low B)
Hyundai: 2.54 (a low B)
Mazda: 2.28 (a C)
Ford: 2.17 (a C)
Nissan: 2.13 (a C)
Kia: 1.93 (a C)
Volkswagen: 1.58 (a low C)
Saturn: 1.49 (a high D)
Chevrolet: 1.37 (a D)
Audi: 1.29 (a D)
GMC: 1.25 (a D)
Jeep: 1.08 (a D)
Chrysler: 1.04 (a D)
Dodge: 0.97 (a D).
Q: Can I be fired for this ?
I work at a small assisted living facility in Florida. My CPR and First Aid aren’t expired until December 2010. I got them on my own before I started working at my job.
My job wants me to go to a place thats half an hour away to get it again within the next couple months. And not get paid for the time I spend there in the class. If I refuse to go can I get fired? Also is it legal to make your employees attend a class and not pay them?
Understand, that if I needed it I would go.
Also, my boss told me that during an emergency (like a hurricane) that since I have a minivan, we will be using my vehicle to transport the residents to the bigger “safer” facility. She didn’t even ask, just volunteered my only vehicle (when I have children and a husband at home) If I got into an accident wouldn’t I be the one getting sued? Is it okay to refuse this? They really should have a company vehicle. They wouldn’t even pay me for gas to transport them. I just do not see how this is my responsibility.
A: If your job is covered by a labor union agreement then I suggest you consult with your union representative to determine if you have any specific rights regarding training requirements and use of personal vehicles for employer business.
Otherwise your employment is what is known as at-will employment and your employer can change the terms and conditions of your employment at any time so long as they do not violate certain federal and state statutes (which they don’t in your particular situation).
This is more a matter of what is fair for your employer to do as opposed to what is legal. You should try and negotiate with your employer in this case. It is very unusual and unfair (but not illegal) for your employee to not cover your expenses for your CPR training and use of your vehicle for its benefit and you should point this out and ask them to reconsider. There is not much else you can do unless you are willing to risk loss of employment over the issue (it doesn’t sound like you are though).
As an aside, since someone else brought it up, you can still bear full liability for any accident that occurs while using your vehicle for your employer. Your employer may also be liable but that only means that anyone filing a claim has the option file it against either or both of you. It’s another thing you may want to consider. You should check your employer’s policies regarding indemnification (a fancy word for saying that your employer will cover your legal expenses in defending any claim filed against you for work related actions).
