Q: 2010 Summer Solstice Peak, Do you know when 2010 summer solstice will reach its peak?
Please tell me when in 2010 summer solstice will reach its peak because i will send my kids for summer day camp through this program at summerdaycamping.co.tv

Thank you

A: The 2010 Summer Solstice is an event that occurred yesterday on June 21st at 4.29AM Pacific time in western Canada. There is no such thing as a Summer Solstice peak. Starting today, June 22, 2010 the length of each day will very gradually get shorter and the amount depends upon your latitude. The peak or highest temperatures of the Summer normally occur by July 29th in my part of the world.

Q: Does anyone know of a summer solstice festival around Asheville, NC for 2010?
I have heard of Solstice celebrations in the mountains of NC for a few years. I am interested in attending this year but I cant find any info on it. Does anyone know of anything?

A: Hello, my name is Jessica. I am also looking for a Summer Solstice celebration in Asheville. If you find one will you please let me know?

Thank you, Jessica

Q: Buy a Pontiac Solstice, or wait for the 2010 Camaro?
I’m really digging the Pontiac Solstice, and like the small size; It fits well with my garage which is not that huge, and has a look that is definitely unique (The BMW Z4 is the only other car which comes to mind, in terms of front-end design for a covertible).

On the other hand. I’m in love with the 2010 Camaro; Bad News – Production is backed up 14k cars going forward; I could get one on the open market, but would pay above retail. And I just cannot bring myself to do that – One year is not worth several thousand dollars more.

I really don’t want to wait trading in my PT Cruiser for another year, so I’m inclined go with the Pontiac.

Thoughts?
NOTE: I’d jump for the Saturn as I do dig it over the Solstice, but I have my concerns about buying a model that did not sell well and the entire brand is promised to be phased out by 2010.

A: For the same price as the Camaro, you could find the Solstice GXP, which has a 265HP Turbocharged 4 cylinder engine, which makes it much faster than the 306HP V6 Camaro, but still slower than the 426HP V8 SS.

The Solstice does handle much better and is more fun to drive than even the Camaro SS, but I have heard of lots of problems with the Solstice’s convertible top breaking and other problems. The Solstice is the same car as the Saturn Sky, but the Saturn is built better and has little or no problems with the top.

If you want comfort and practicality, wait for the Camaro.
If you are into going to a race track or turning fast, go with the Solstice.

Q: POLL:Are you coming to Summer Solstice?
Are you coming to Summer Solstice 2010? Hope you are! If you are and wanna hear the best drums, come to the LOVE DRUMS!! we play sum pretty cool shiz… hope 2 see you there… email me!

A: No. Never heard of summer soltice b4…

Q: Are there more earth quakes in 2010 than usual?
As we get closer to the second solstice of 2012 is the activity increasing? Why (explain)

A: The number and magnitude of earthquakes is not increasing. Our ability to detect them is greatly increasing. They are also being reported by the news media more rapidly and covered more widely.
Earthquakes of the magnitude of the Haiti and Chile quakes happen on the average 2 to 3 times per year. It is just coincidence that these two occurred closely together. People are just looking for anything that they think might somehow be linked to the 2012 silliness. Some of them were even asking if the snowstorms this past winter were signs of doomsday. Can it get any more ridiculous than that? The Earth is doing what it has done for billions of years and will continue to do for billions more.

“The USGS estimates that several million earthquakes occur in the world each year. Many go undetected because they hit remote areas or have very small magnitudes. The NEIC now locates about 50 earthquakes each day, or about 20,000 a year.

As more and more seismographs are installed in the world, more earthquakes can be and have been located. However, the number of large earthquakes (magnitude 6.0 and greater) has stayed relatively constant.

A partial explanation may lie in the fact that in the last twenty years, we have definitely had an increase in the number of earthquakes we have been able to locate each year. This is because of the tremendous increase in the number of seismograph stations in the world and the many improvements in global communications. In 1931, there were about 350 stations operating in the world; today, there are more than 8,000 stations and the data now comes in rapidly from these stations by electronic mail, internet and satellite. This increase in the number of stations and the more timely receipt of data has allowed us and other seismological centers to locate earthquakes more rapidly and to locate many small earthquakes which were undetected in earlier years. The NEIC now locates about 20,000 earthquakes each year or approximately 50 per day. Also, because of the improvements in communications and the increased interest in the environment and natural disasters, the public now learns about more earthquakes.

According to long-term records (since about 1900), we expect about 17 major earthquakes (7.0 – 7.9) and one great earthquake (8.0 or above) in any given year.”

2012hoax.org is a really good website that covers all the various claims about 2012 and about the charlatans who are promoting it. Go to it and read about the things that have you concerned. They give sources for their information and they aren’t selling anything. The others are NASA Senior Scientist Dr. David Morrison, Dr. Donald Yeomans of JPL Near Earth Object Program, and Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Director of the Hayden Planetarium, all saying that the 2012 tripe is false.

Q: Summer Solstice in Alaska … looking for input?
My friends and i want to fly to alaska this summer (2010) for the summer solstice. i heard that lots of partys and festivals go on. i am looking to find out where the hot spots/bars and all night stuff is going on. does anyone know???

Thanks

A: i spent 6 summers in seward alaska, which is one of the most beautiful towns ive ever seen, and there was a mad summer solstice party in moose pass, which is like 45 minute drive from seward. i think there might be some good parties in girdwood too. but these parties are more for outdoors, nature, camping types. if you want clubs and bars then you need to be in anchorge… although, there are tons of bars in seward. my favorite ones are The Yukon and The Pit. homer is also a really amazing city, and if you go there then you must go to the sawlty dawg saloon

Q: How does the high point of the moon’s orbital plane vary compared to the direction of tilt of the Earth’s axis
If the high point of the moon’s orbital plane was always alligned with the direction of tilt of the axis then eclipses would only occur near equinoxes (when new and full moon occur along the ecliptic) but eclipses occur an many times of the year (even on the winter solstice in 2010).

A: The important thing for eclipses is not the earth’s axial tilt — the plane of the celestial equator — it is the ecliptic, the plane of Earth’s orbit around the Sun. The Moon’s orbit is tilted from the ecliptic by about five degrees, and it crosses the plane of the ecliptic at two “nodes”, called the ascending node and the descending node.

Once per year, the point of new moon will nearly coincide with the ascending node, and we will have a solar eclipse (full, partial, or annual) somewhere on Earth. About six months later, the point of new moon will nearly coincide with the descending node, and we’ll have another solar eclipse.

The same is true of full moons and lunar eclipses.

As it turns out, these nodes rotate (backwards, slowly) around the plane of the ecliptic, too — it takes almost 19 years for the ascending node to rotate once around the ecliptic. As this happens, the time of year in which eclipses occur slowly moves through the calendar.

Q: Is it a bad idea for me to buy a Pontiac Car, even though it is going out of business in 2010?
I really want a pontiac solstice, so can someone please help me???

A: so Pontiac will be gone. But GM dealers will still be required to honor the warranty and GM will still make parts for the car. There is nothing to worry about.

Q: What’s your idea of a “politically” correct Xmas greeting?
Here’s mine:

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for a gender neutral, celebration of the winter solstice holiday (or, to some, Christmas), practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all and a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2010, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great (not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country or is the only “AMERICA” in the western hemisphere), and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical disability, religious faith, choice of computer platform, or sexual preference of the wishee.

Legal Disclaimer: By accepting this agreement, you are accepting these terms.

This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others, and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher.

This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year, or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.

Sincerely,

(Name withheld for legal, social and cultural considerations.)

PS… Merry CHRISTmas to you and all of your kin.

A: That was a good one and so true, have a great xmas

Q: Is it true that the “galactic alignment” that is suppose to happen on 12/21/12 happens every year on that day?
I read that it happens every year on the winter solstice, so why would it be any different in 2012 than it was in 2009, 2010, and 2011?

A: Yes and no.

Do you believe having the Sun in Leo on your birthday is important? Does that control your life? If you do, they maybe you think this galactic alignment is important too. I don’t. I say nothing special will happen in 2012.

The Sun is seen approximately in the direction of the galactic center every year on that date, but it does change by about 0.014 degrees every year.

The 2012 people are claiming that in addition to the Sun bing there, that the vernal equinox will line up with the center of the galaxy that year. This is due to precession of the equinoxes, or the wobble of the Earth’s axis of rotation, which makes one complete “wobble” in 26,000 years and accounts for the 0.014 degrees I mentioned above. So, will the vernal equinox *really* line up with the galactic center in 2012? My Norton’s Star Atlas, Epoch 1950, shows the vernal equinox just about 1 degree away from the galactic equator, but still about 7 degrees north of the galactic center. 1/360 of 26,0000 years is 72 years, and from 1950 + 72 is 2022. But I suppose I could be measuring that small distance on my chart a little off and the Vernal Equinox *could* be exactly on the Galactic equator in 2012. By the way, the Galactic equator is not an exact thing like the Earth’s equator. It is an average of billions of stars and kind of a fuzzy concept anyway. Its definition can change with better star counts. In any case, the Ecliptic crosses the Galactic Equator about 7 degrees from the Galactic center. And is 0.04 degrees difference *really* important? 0.04 degrees is how far precession will move the Vernal Equinox in 3 years.

A: i would laugh out loud if i got that as a card nice touch

Q: My proposal for Earth Day 2010?
Seeing as how Christmas is stripped of it’s meaning and called “Winter Holiday” to make it more “inclusive”, I’m proposing a few other politically correct changes. Earth Day should be called “Favorite Planet Day”. Cinco de Mayo should be called “Historical Event in Your Ethic Groups History Day”. And last but not least, Winter Solstice should be called “Interesting Celestial Event Day”. So does political correctness, fairness and inclusiveness dictate that this should be done?

A: Yeah, I agree with you.

Q: date of glastonbury 2010?
is it weekend before or after solstice?

A: 23rd-27th June 2010.
